Kenya’s Electoral body woes IEBC continue to increase as safety agencies warn on the commission’s plans of using expired gas cylinders ahead of August polls. Reports have revealed that the cylinders were acquired in 2007 and have not been recertified them yet ksh 200 million was released for the process.

The occupational Safety and health act ,2007, under section 70(5) of the constitution states that the cylinders for non corrosive gases should be examined every 5 years. The purpose of the cylinders is Incase of a black out in areas with no electricity or with electricity issues where they are used for emergency lighting.

With the preparedness of IEBC being questioned the commission is yet to address the concerns. The gas expands about 270 times, being flammable it is dangerous should it not be contained.

,’ The purpose of this letter is to request your immediate attention on this matter and ensure each cylinder in your use undergoes immediate thorough examination and testing in accordance with Section 70(5) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act to safeguard users and persons who may come into vicinity of the cylinders,’ stated director of occupational safety and health services Dr Andrew Muruka.

Questions have been raised as IEBC has been allegedly using the same gas cylinders since 2007.
