With only countable days to go before the August 9th elections, the focus has only been on presidential aspirants and their manifestos but is the election body, IEBC ready for the election?
The Interim Election and Boundaries Commission , according to the 2010 constitution is mandated with the task of ensuring that elections run smoothly from preparations to conducting the elections.
Article 88(1) that is enabled by sections 22 and 23 of the Elections Act, has seen aspirants representing themselves for clearance ahead of the elections. Elections according to the constitution should be free and fair unlike the skirmishes that occurred in 2007.
Democracy , a rule of law that enables people express themselves freely and choose leaders of their choice Is in place in our country. While unfair elections are undemocratic , IEBC’ s role is to ensure that as under article 81 the cornerstone of democracy is free and fairness.
IEBC consists of several bodies that help it conduct elections . This include; candidates ,the registrar of political parties, University Organization Commissions political parties just to name but a few. While elections might be announced by the IEBC that doesn’t mean they are true , their role therefore is also to ensure objectivity is maintained in the elections.
Kenya has been facing many problems from ethnicity , tribalism, corruption, defamation as well as incitenes. The problem of politics is not the song but who the singer is according to PLO Lumumba. All leaders should therefore avoid being tribal ahead of the elections.
Technology has advanced and there are many platforms for people to express their views and opinions,this should not be used to divide people as elections near . The body should be on the look for any one who incites people.
The ball is now in the court of the IEBC as Kenyans await the August 9th elections.
