According to the supplementary budget forecasts presented in parliament, the duos monthly basic salary and allowances would decrease from KSh41.2 million to KSh36.4 million for the fiscal year ending June 2022.
Compensation for other top officials, on the other hand, will remain unchanged. Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yatani did not provide an explanation for the adjustments, but his Ministry declared that the pay will be resumed after a new president is sworn in post the General Election on August 9, 2022.
This is not the first time President Kenyatta and his deputy had to deal with reduced pay; in March 2020, Uhuru proclaimed a voluntary reduction in the salary of key state officials in response to the extreme economic conditions brought on by the coronavirus epidemic.
